Dada

Dada Received its enigmatic name in February 1916; was a reaction against the brutality of war, the expediency of art and literature and the dangerous inadequacy of rational thought; in fact it spat out its contempt for the spiritual and moral decadence of a whole intellectual, cultural and social system. Born in neutral Zurich in the middle of the anarchic destruction of the Great War, it expressed its disgust with a morally culpable bourgeoisie and a spiritually nerveless art which had no objective beyond a simplistic social photography, a faith in its own function as anodyne and a reprehensible dedication to self-fulfilment. With unabashed relish Dada declared its negative intent: it wished, apparently, to destroy art along with bourgeois society, but in truth it opposed itself to the abuse of art rather than art itself, to society rather than humanity. Its exponents were poets and artists (Marcel Duchamp, Hugo Ball, Tristan Tzara, Richard Huelsenbeck, Man Ray, Max Ernst) wh...

Pandemic, quarantine, a real-life experiences of pseudo reverse migration

2020-9-13 Sunday, the day before flying back to Taiwan We flew back from Taiwan to stay away from the thread and inconvenience of Corovid-19, on February 19. Quarantined at the home where we have been living for more than 15 years is a piece of cake. Actually ever since returning from Taiwan   2020-9-14 Monday There was a long line waiting for taxi. The policewoman tola me it might take an hour to clear up and I'd better wait inside. After an hour I went out and saw no line and some taxies waiting for riders. Filling out a form and receiving whole body sanitization with both hands raised at shoulder level a regular-sized taxi took me to my new home. The drive, who didn't respond to my friendly chatting, printed out a receipt for me to sign. It shows NT$$1350.00. I gave him $1,500 and told him to keep the changes. He seemed to be surprised. For the first time in life, I explored a new home all by myself. There were several urgent actions awaiting. 1. Make sure the key points we...

Language learning and teaching

9:00 2020/8/29  Taiwanese is the first language I learned naturally at home and at the church building where my family resided. I was not aware of the existence of Mandarin until 7 after I attended grade school. Obviously, I was totally lost the first moment I stepped into the classroom and could not be assigned a seat because I was accepted into the school after the number of enrollment was less than anticipated, in 1952. I was accustomed to the classroom atmosphere in the church Sunday School but not the disciplines and the language used in the public school. Basically, my classmates were in the same situation except I missed the first couple of weeks because I was considered one year younger and not qualified for entering the school that year because my birthdate was more than one month after the standard date for the school year. Fortunately, all the strange language I heard was about the commands for actions and I could comprehend them by simply watching others. Shortly after ...

Practiaum

Image

History, especially the US history, and me

2020/06/27 22:09 A second blog series to recall and recommend. This is about the significance of US history to the people around the world. This was inspired by attending the oral defense of Cho-chien Feng yesterday at 2pm through web meeting. Here is his resume as of now .  I knew his dissertation plan for a long time and I had listened to one of his special speeches about some of the content in a special speech gathering of the Taiwanese Association of America in St. Louis last year. I was not inspired of any actions of me until yesterday. It would help me and the author by having a blog series to talk about and learn from that dissertation. This does not mean that I will study that part of history thoroughly or become a historian. I simply think the history of US revolution is a critical step to knowing more about democracy.  Here is a rough list of what has come to my mind, before I dig into his dissertation: Were there immigrants without the heritage of a Britsch or bein...

A dream that reflects or reveal, in my old age

2020/6/26 13:11 A morning nap took me into a new territory of imagination or in-dream-action. In the dream, I was given instruction from a mentor to look for ideas for interviewing some people for new projects by going through a pile of papers he collected with Samson and Tai. We sat on the floor to flip through all the papers looking for ideas or inspiration. Obviously, we could not find anything, not even a beginning point. I started to think about the method and the preparatory steps that were lacking. I woke up shortly after 12pm and feeling grateful for the dream. It reminds me that I have been living in that dream in the real world of lockdown by the Covid19. Shortly after we started the online worship beginning March 15, 2020, Dr. Yu Hao, a brand new PHD in education and the deacon in charge of worship services, gave me an idea to start a brand new Hymn Briefing half hour before the online worship service starts every Sunday, at 9:30, utilizing my recorded demonstration of the h...
