A dream that reflects or reveal, in my old age
2020/6/26 13:11
A morning nap took me into a new territory of imagination or in-dream-action.
In the dream, I was given instruction from a mentor to look for ideas for interviewing some people for new projects by going through a pile of papers he collected with Samson and Tai.
We sat on the floor to flip through all the papers looking for ideas or inspiration. Obviously, we could not find anything, not even a beginning point. I started to think about the method and the preparatory steps that were lacking. I woke up shortly after 12pm and feeling grateful for the dream.
It reminds me that I have been living in that dream in the real world of lockdown by the Covid19.
Shortly after we started the online worship beginning March 15, 2020, Dr. Yu Hao, a brand new PHD in education and the deacon in charge of worship services, gave me an idea to start a brand new Hymn Briefing half hour before the online worship service starts every Sunday, at 9:30, utilizing my recorded demonstration of the hymn to be sung that morning. Because the majority of the congregation, including the piano players, don't have the hymnal I volunteered to continue making multi-lingual slides for the singing. In addition to the slide sets, I have been making for more than 10 years I started to make a new score for the pianist for each hymn, including all the verses in the score and recorded the pronunciation and the singing in two separate files to help the majority of the congregation learn the hymns.
Now, without discussing what and how to introduce I started making new video files for the briefing. Because of the need to include three languages I chose to avoid oral presentation but to introduce through reading. Using the slide-making software on the computer I could easily include all three languages on the same screen for all to read at the same time. The slide presentation also avoids the awkwardness some people might have in listening to the wrongful accent of a second-language speaker.
The real challenge is actually in the content and the ways of presentation in addition to the rhetorics.
I have never seen or heard of hymn-briefing. In most cases that I have seen the singing part is always the main point when it comes to the teaching and the learning of hymns. In an online gathering and one-way communication
Now after that morning dream I started to realize that Dr. Hao is actually that mentor in the dream who inspired me by giving me an assignment on a blank paper. There must be some term of such kind of education and tutoring.
The challenges including the points of instructions, the mechanism and the rhetorics of exposition, the timing and the sequences of the display, the purposes, and the functions of the briefing are some of the key issues involved. Yesterday, I sat in front of the notebook computer with nothing in mind to start the preparation for the briefing.I had to walk up and down between floors to alleviate the tension and worries associated with the exploration of what's in the given hymn good for briefing.
Anyway, it has been good exercises and I have managed to come up with new points and new ways of briefing in the 8 weeks I have gone through. Obviously, the speed of work has picked up. Without knowing the effect and the efficiency of the briefing I found the assignment and the exercises rewarding and fulfilling. They enrich my days of lockdown and my growth as a Christian trying to find some new ways of serving in the last stage of my life.

Every method or model of serving or helping has limit and could not be appreciated by all. This is why the wheel has to keep rolling for everybody to take turns in enjoying or bearing the dissatisfaction through the services of others. I believe this is one of the greatest contributions to the human world from the Christian gospel and the Presbyterian culture.
Thanks to the new ways of education from Dr. Hao. I wish I could display or link to his resume here.
