Going to the school every morning, we invited one another to walk together. We had to walk on the ridge that separated the ownership of the fields and there was no street for us to walk on. We had to go through a ditch called “pig’s head” where water might be dangerous to us. Sometimes, the bridge might be washed away and the traffic would be broken keeping us from attending school in Sinkang. We had to take other route with longer distance to Sinkang.

During the school years, the lunch is an interesting point of our lives. The pupils would bring firewood, rice, vegetables, etc., to the church. The church had a shareable kitchen and they managed to facilitate cooking lunch by the pupils themselves. Sometimes by oneself, while two or three persons might share the work together at other times. Sometimes, duck eggs might be carried for preparing the non-staple food. Sometimes we added sugar to add flavor to the rice and making sweet porridge. We tried many kinds of cooking methods. We had to go to the church for cooking the lunch everyday, without carrying bento (boxed lunch), nor buying lunch from others. The children of those Christian families were running around between the school and the church every day.

The teacher (the pastor) at the church was specially kind and close to us. Because of the lunch-cooking experiences, we felt that the church was like part of our home.
