37 searching and being searched / sought

Some denominations of Protestant Christians don't assign and send our people to designated locations such as local congregations, but letting the places in need to search for human resources. Similarly, the evangelists or pastors search for their workplaces. This model of mission / ministry has been practiced for hundreds of years.

Born in a Christian family, a pastor's family, I have been living in this institution naturally. Before I served a session of a Presbyterian church I was involved in pastor searching because I was involved in the establishment of a new church. The journeys of preachers / pastors has become one of the concerns in my career, including my life, living, and career. While searching and developing the mission and ministry of the Gardeners of Hope Foundation, I cannot help but include this field in the vision. The day before yesterday, June 17, 2018, I was enlightened to see the possibility of including this subject in my memoir and invite those related or concerned to participate in the discussion thinking that this might become one of the important services of the Gardeners of Hope Foundation.

I would try to avoid the pros and cons between the two opposite systems of calling or assigning the gospel workers but jumping directly to cover the practical issues thinking that this approach might attract respondents quicker.

We did not have any name in the pocket when we searched for the second pastor at the Taiwanese Presbyterian Church of Greater St. Louis, and left the search widely open. In the first meeting that was supposed to get organized and establish the model of operation, including the moderator, the secretary, the principles and the methods of meeting and the decision-making, the mission, the objectives, the dos and donts, etc. I remember I was the one to raise the issue about doing it with Taiwanese way or US way. Some people asked for the differences between the two methods. On top of my head, from my imagination without referring to any reference, I pointed out that with Taiwanese way, everybody except the candidates know who have been looked after, with the searching team sending people around on secret missions of scouting, while in US way, nobody but the candidates know the searching with a rule of thumb, passed along in the Presbytery, that the candidates should have no contact with the searching congregation within a period of time immediately preceding the search. This is believed to be accumulated wisdom across the many Presbytery in the country. The candidates are not supposed to include those appear in person at the site of the searching congregation. This excludes the possibility that an associate pastor become the principal pastor.

When we started search for the second pastor the first one was still on the job. Everybody expected that the active pastor assisted the search hoping that he recommended some names. Shortly we found that the pastors are generally short of enough experience in searching for pastors from the standpoint of a congregation, especially those who have never served as an elder in a session. I wondered if the seminaries provide teachings on pastoral-searching.

To become a series that attract participation I guess that I need to get into the two major series of issues: what are being searched for and how to be found. The congregations are looking for pastor and are searched by the pastors. While the pastors are being sought after they are looking for congregations, too.
