03 social work and why social work

20017/10/28
I got to know something about social work while studying the university bulletin before signing up for the college entrance examination. I found the interesting information listed under the department of sociology and decided to switch my first choice from music to sociology, partly for the reasons of social work courses listed.

I started to take courses in social in sophomore, from the introduction to social work to social casework and was fascinated. The social work curricula at Tunghai was first taught by Ms. Hsu-hua Liang followed by Ms. Li-tao Chang, The courses I took was taught by Ms. Chang who just returned from Hawaii University upon receiving MSW degree in 1964 when I was a freshman.

After graduation and returning home from military services in the front line on the island of Kim-mn̂g, I applied for a job with the Christian Children's Fund and was accepted.

Christian Children's Fund was the charitable foundation that owned and operated "Kong-im" Orphanage in Taichung. I had chances to visit the orphanage several times in my student days and became acquainted with Rec. Chong-jîn Tân 陳宗仁牧師, who became the chaplain of CCF when I applied for a job.

I started with the new workstation of Family Helper in Kong-san, as a social caseworker, for the Kaohsiung County shortly after the station started functioning. I got to learn to ride the motorcycle there. After three months of commuting from my parents' home in Kaohsiung, I applied for and got the chance to transfer to Taichung Family Helper.

After serving CCF for two years I realized that I need to go abroad to learn more about social work. I got a chance to go to the New School for Social Sciences in Manhattan, NYC, in 1972, as a non-magistrate foreign student majoring in sociology. One year later, after I used up all the money I brought but obtained my immigrant's status with a green card through the fifth priority, I left the campus and started working in restaurants to raise fund for further study.

While I continued to look for an opportunity to study social work I got a chance to enter the George Warren Brown School of Social Work of Washington University in St. Louis. I drove my 1966 Plymouth Satellite to St. Louis for a new life as a graduate student majoring in social work for an MSW degree, starting January 1975.

While in the MSW program I took the courses in the three major divisions of direct-service social work, the casework, the group work, and the community organization. I went through the practicums of a caseworker for intake service and a paid community organizing social worker at the Grace Hill Settlement House. I also took a practicum at the Edgewood Children Serve as a caseworker handling one case of a boy from Illinois who parents were imprisoned. I considered myself a generic social worker.

Two years later I finished my study in December 1976 and started looking for job at the same time applying for advanced study in the scientific Ph.D. program for social work research at the same Washington University. Shortly after I was promised a job as the only social worker in a home health program stationed in Poplar Bluff, Mo, covering five counties I received admission to the Ph.D. study and gave up the employment.

After four years I finished the required coursework and went through several mentors after the first one, Dr. William Gordon, retired suddenly I moved out of the study room and accepted an employment at McDonnell-Douglas Corp as an information system analyst for the product support division. After one year of being an off-campus student, I stopped registration and gave up the status of a Ph.D. student.

I see social work as a discipline of changing people through social context and my major sources of knowledge is more in sociology than in psychology, although I had taken all the courses of clinical psychology and counseling available to me. After going through Ph.D. study I prefer advancing the methods of social work through scientific methods more than intuition and good will. I also see social work as a discipline applicable in every field of work rather than simply something for non-profit and charitable services.  Therefore, after retiring from social work services of the Gardens of Hope Foundation, I work to extend my social work knowledge and experiences into a generic field of career development of individuals, groups, and society at large.

2018/9/7 at the party of Carrollton Bank in Clayton, Dr. Meiling Tung introduced Dr. Sean Joe to me. We happened to hang around in Ms. Tina Hsieh's office doing nothing.  I saw the couple when I checked in at the party, right behind them, without paying attention to anybody at the party. I did not get excited about going to the party in the beginning. It was very noisy at the party and I could hardly understand anything I heard.

In that office, the noise situation was improved but I was still not interested in whatever going on around me until I was invited to meet Sean who sat facing the desk. It was a surprise to me that I was facing an associate dean of the school of social work of Washington Universiy, the George Warren Brown School of Social Work, where I spent 7 of my previous years, in St. Louis.

More surprisingly, he responded to my sharing of what I learned beyond GWB. This is very unusual. I told him that I would like to visit him again. (4:53 2018/9/8)

The encounter with Dr. Sean Joe reminds me of the needs to write down what I learned, and affecting my career later on, at GWB and to describe all I learned about social work after GWB.

The first couse I took at GWB was about group work. We met for a marathon group in the Brown lounge before three days and nights before the school started. It was a big eye-opener to me. We use the video camera, that was in 1975, way before the Video Cassette Recorder and the low-cost camcorder became available in the consumer market, to record the group dynamics and immediate reviewing. I paid attention to every detail of how the group was handled as I had been a big fan of group activities and the skills of handling groups. In the middle of the semester, we took turns to design and lead group activities and that was a big challenge to me because I was aware that my English was not enough for the challenges. Fortunately, I was inspired to come up with a creative idea that might be a breakthrough. I ran the group without saying a word - by presenting a stack of cards that carried the sequenced instructions shuffled. At first, some group members became impatient waiting for me to give instructions. One of the members noticed that I did place that stack of cards in the center of the circle of the sitting members.  She started to pick up the card, browsed and realized that they were instructions. She led the group to figure out what I plan for the group to act and proceeded through. I was released and the instructor, Ron Heiligman, gave me positive feedback. (11:44 2018/9/8)
